Trade effluent treatment
turns sweet for Munitech
Munitech has been appointed to design and construct
a trade effluent treatment plant at the Candy Tops
sweet manufacturing plant in East London. The
appointment calls for treatment process design, plant
design, construction and plant commissioning and the
project is scheduled for completion by June 2009.

Maragra and
Ubombo Sugar Mills
Bosch Projects was commissioned by Illovo Sugar to undertake
a front end package study for both Maragra (Mozambique)
and Ubombo (Swaziland) Sugar Mills at the end of 2007.
andy Tops discharges effluent, with an organic loading
equivalent to that generated by a population of 18 000 people,
to the municipal sewerage system. The effluent constitutes a significant
portion of the treatment load on the Buffalo City Municipality wastewater
treatment plant and it was decided that the Candy Tops effluent
should be pre-treated before discharge to the City.

“One of the main challenges in the development of a cost effective
treatment process is the degradation of the carbohydrate rich effluent
without generating excessive sludge” says Project Manager Cindy
Wells. “Laboratory trials were conducted to understand the effluent
characteristics and how the effluent would behave under biological
treatment. The trials indicated that an aerated lagoon with an
optimised retention time would effectively meet this goal. The aerated
lagoon also gives a degree of process flexibility in accepting slugs
of very high strength effluent.”
Munitech has drawn on its many years of operations and maintenance
experience to provide a low maintenance, operator friendly design
that will meet the client’s objectives for years to come.

T
he purpose of the study was to perform preliminary engineering and
costing for the expansion of the factory from 167 tch to 230 tch.
This study is now complete and the Illovo Sugar Board has approved the
expansion programme and Bosch Projects has been appointed as the
preferred consultant for the engineering, procurement and construction and
management of this project.
The project, headed by Nico Wentzel, is planned for two phases, with the
second phase due for completion in time for season start-up in April 2010.
The Ubombo project requires detailed engineering and costing for the
expansion of the factory from 410 tch to 580 tch and the building of cogeneration
plant.
Vivian Gough is leading the project team and the front-end package will be
completed early in 2009.

The ceremony was attended by SBA’s Managing Director – Max Stemele

evoked a true sense of “Ubuntu” among all those present.
n 8th August 2008, SBA had the privilege to be part of an auspicious
EMM project hand-over ceremony. This occasion saw the successful
culmination of the first phase of a pilot programme in Tembisa, which
was aimed at reducing the water consumption of indigent households
by repairing / replacing leaking plumbing fixtures as well as imparting
water conservation awareness education to the household residents.
The approach was based on the 80/20 principle, where the highest
