Munitech delivers turnkey water treatment plant solutions Munitech has successfully completed the turnkey installation of two water treatment plants in Delmas, Mpumalanga. “ T he project was originally conceived as part of Munitech’s appointment to render operational management support to Delmas Local Municipality. One of the primary challenges in implementing the project was timing - the period from receipt of order to plant commissioning was only four months,” says project manager, Cindy Wells. “Munitech’s risk analysis of the town’s water management systems showed that the existing infrastructure could not sustainably provide quality potable water. The raw water source has iron, manganese, turbidity and microbiological contamination and it was identified that treatment would be required to make this water safe for the Delmas community. “Munitech’s water treatment solution is based on the installation of two treatment plants – an 8 Ml/d plant supplying Delmas town and a 4 Ml/d plant supplying the community of Botleng. The process design incorporates green sand and activated carbon filtration. The fast track implementation was made possible by implementing the same process train in both plants and by taking a modular approach to both installations. The plants were designed in 1.3 Ml/d skid mounted modularised units. “These new plants have been operational for four months and all the treatment objectives have been achieved. In fact, performance is better than anticipated and feedback from the community is very positive.” Aerial view of units. The roll-out of Bridge City, the new ‘destination’ for the Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, (INK) and Phoenix areas, continues to gear up to facilitate the opening of the anchor 40 000m 2 shopping centre. ro j e c t m a n a g e d b y To n g a a t H u l e t t Developments and developed as a joint venture between Tongaat Hulett Developments and Ethekwini Municipality, Bridge City is destined to become the new ‘Gateway’ for the region. The first phase of the development, the town centre, brings 2 to the market some 600 000m of commercial, retail, and residential opportunities and features the shopping centre, a regional Magistrate’s court, a regional referral hospital and an inter-modal transport facility (train, buses and taxis). P SBA, as design and implementation engineers for the civils infrastructure, has recently overseen the completion of the R38 million Phase 1 infrastructure contract. This encompassed the construction of the earthworks platforms, the main spine roads through the development and the installation of other bulk services to the initial stages of the development. The construction of the new shopping centre is well underway, with a target opening date of November 2009. This has required that the surrounding roads be completed by the opening date. To meet this requirement, the R12 million Bhejane Road “road-over-rail” bridge has been designed and construction is well underway. Phase 2 of the roads and infrastructure roll out is also ready for construction. The R35 million contract includes a 14 meter high retaining wall, additional earthworks, further access roads and remodelling of Besters intersection to cope with the higher traffic volumes. A major challenge undertaken by SBA on behalf of Tongaat Hulett Developments is integrating the activities and programmes of the numerous developers and contractors working in a very restricted environment. This currently includes separate contractors for the shopping centre development, the road-over-rail bridge, the Phase 2 roads and infrastructure and the new Bhejane Road approaches to Bridge City. The number of developments within the Bridge City confines is expected to grow, in the short term, to include the hospital, the Magist Ʌї
