Bosch Projects and Marubeni Corporation collaborate to
restructure Barbados’ sugar industry
Press Conference with Government Officials, Bosch Projects and
Marubeni Corporation.

In 2009, Bosch Projects was appointed by the Barbados
Cane Industry Corporation (BCIC) to assist with restructuring
the island’s sugar industry to ensure its economic viability.
The Barbados government requested conceptual plans to
overhaul the industry’s agricultural, industrial and operational
transitional components.
During a visit to the island, Bosch Projects introduced BCIC
to Japanese commercial juggernaut, Marubeni Corporation, as
potential funding arrangers for the project’s full scope and the
industrial component’s EPC contractor.
In December 2012, Bosch Projects submitted a final design
report to BCIC detailing the way forward for the project’s
industrial component. This included recommendations to
consolidate the island’s two sugar mills and gear up for
cogeneration and the production of special and refined sugars,
edible syrups, High Test Molasses and ‘B’ Molasses. Bosch
Projects also identified the need for project funding and a
suitable EPC contractor to accelerate the project.
Bosch Projects and Marubeni Corporation were well received
by the Barbados government in a highly-publicised meeting
in Bridgetown. Bosch Projects’ sugar director, Paul Hamilton,
said, “This project is extremely important to the people
of Barbados and we are making every effort to ensure its
successful implementation.”
