15 Doug McGarr hangs up his slide rule After 43 years of service to the group, Doug McGarr finally hung up his slide rule (oops sorry – his laptop) on 28 February 2013. “It’s been grand”, says Doug “and I have really enjoyed working with such a vibrant and happy bunch of people, both here at Bosch Munitech and at our client, Durban Solid Waste.” Doug joined Moreland Technical and Engineering Consultants (as the company was then known) in February 1967. In those early days, Doug was employed as Project Manager on the development of Prospecton Industrial, and was involved in the preliminary design of many of the industrial townships in the Durban area, including the Phoenix Industrial and Canelands townships. During this time, Doug developed an interest in railway engineering and was responsible for all subsequent company rail siding design and construction projects throughout the country. One of the last projects that Doug worked on before retiring (the first time) in 1993 was the construction of the new sugar mill for TSB at Komatipoort. Doug was responsible for the design of the earthworks, roads, drainage and rail siding. Three years after retiring, Doug was asked by the late Sean Reilly, founder of Bosch Munitech, to assist (for a few months) in setting up the waste management programme for Durban Solid Waste in the former townships around Durban. As the saying goes – time flies when you’re having fun – and the “few months” suddenly became 17 years. Steve McCarley, Bosch Munitech MD says “It has been a real privilege having Doug on our team. His calm professionalism, attention to detail and really wicked sense of humour have contributed so much to our company culture. We will miss you Doug and don’t forget to pop in for tea on the odd Friday.” Hamba Kahle Coenie Bosch Munitech regrets to announce the passing of Coenie Kellerman in January this year.
