Tidal surge Rehabilitation
Park Rynie, a popular camping destination for
locals and tourists, is one of many beaches on
KZN’s South Coast that was severely affected by
the tidal surge activity of March 2007.
SBA was appointed by Umdoni Municipality as the engineering
consultants for this rehabilitation project, which has recently
been completed with strict environmental control.
The scope of works included:
•
Rehabilitation of the sand dune and construction of
approximately 170 metres of sea wall, using a soft
engineering solution of a sand bag wall
•
Upgrading of the existing access road from gravel to
asphalt, as well as stormwater control
•
•
Replacement of damaged fencing
•

Water conservation
The Water Services Revenue Section of Ekurhuleni
Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) initiated a leak repair
programme in service delivery areas, that include
Katlehong, Zonkezizwe and Thokoza, to reduce lost or
unaccounted water in order to minimise wasteful water
consumption.
SBA was responsible for the prioritisation of targeted houses, preassessment of priority houses and identification of plumbing fixtures
in need of repair or replacement. Repairs, which were carried out
by an EMM appointed contractor over a seven month period, were
managed and then assessed by SBA.
Preliminary analysis of post repair consumption data reveals that
approximately 87% of consumers used less water once repairs
were complete. Current consumption has decreased to 52% of
the average consumption prior to these repairs. In some cases,
household consumption has decreased to less than just 5% of
initial usage, thereby significantly reducing water demand and
unaccounted for water consumption.
The Water Services: Revenue Section of EMM sets a fine example
in taking effective strides to meet the objectives of water conservation
and water demand management.

Kenana Ethanol Project
Bosch Projects’ Energy team recently provided Dedini with
technical support for one of their Africa-based ethanol projects
at Kenana Sugar in the Sudan. This was a challenging
assignment requiring the construction supervision of a new
ethanol plant at Kenana, which is the largest sugar mill on
the African continent. Commissioning was successfully
completed during April 2009 with Bosch Projects’ Dave
Robinson providing the necessary expertise on site. The plant
has successfully achieved its design parameters with ease
and has been a great success.
