A new Ugu District sports complex, to be constructed just inland from St Michaels-on-Sea on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, is due for completion in early January 2010, just in time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. T he proposed R182-million sports complex will offer facilities for soccer, rugby, cricket, swimming, tennis, volleyball and an indoor sports centre. Allowance has also been made for a gym and restaurant. The Shosholoza Joint Venture, of which SBA is a member, has been appointed by the Ugu District Municipality to carry out preliminary design, design and tender, contract administration and construction monitoring for this sports complex project. Multi-disciplinary professional services include project management, architecture, quantity surveying, mechanical, electrical, civil and structural engineering, as well as institutional and social development consulting. SBA and ECPM Engineering Consultants are responsible for the civil and structural engineering components of the project, which is currently at the preliminary design stage. Bulk earthworks for the platform are due to commence shortly. “Besides offering a dedicated sporting venue to the Ugu District, it is intended that this complex will play host to an international soccer team during the 2010 Soccer World Cup,” says project director, Raj Ramchuran. “What better place for an international team to base themselves for training?
