THE AUTHOR Dr Ian Shearer was born in the Whakatāne Maternity Annex, and for the first 18 years of his life he lived on the family dairy farm on Valley Road near Tāneatua. He was educated at Whakatāne High School, Massey University and Nottingham University (UK). He has a BAgrSc, MAgrSc and a PhD in reproductive physiology. He was a Researcher in Animal Science at Ruakura for nine years, a Member of Parliament for nine years and Minister for the Environment, Minister of Broadcasting and Minister of Science & Technology from 1981-1984, Foundation Dean of Science and Engineering at the Auckland University of Technology for nine years and Research Manager and Acting Director of the Waitangi Tribunal for 11 years. The Author reviewing the 1902 – 1917 Hospital Board minutes Dr Shearer retired from the Public Service in January 2005 to return to, and live in, Tāneatua. He is the current President of the Whakatāne & District Historical Society and now busies himself recording the history of people and places in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Page 60
