Tent camps such as this were dotted throughout Te Urewera during the various ‘ Fever ’ epidemics at their height from 1913-1919 .
There were also numerous offers of land 21 . One letter was received from Mr William A Limbrick of Whakātane offering free , five acres of land ‘ on the hill behind Whakatāne Town as a site for a hospital ’. There was a petition presented by Mr John Dillicar of Tāneatua offering £ 343 ‘ provided a hospital was erected on Puketi Native Reserve at Tāneatua ’ and Mr Charles Garlick , offered his interest in the same site for £ 25 which he would hand back as a donation if the offer was accepted within 12 months . The Chairman ( Mr Peebles ) also presented a petition and a subscription list , ‘ signed by 112 persons resident in different parts of Whakatāne County and who subscribed £ 18.6.6 in subs of 2 / 6 * each .’
* Two shillings and six pence .
In an effort to resolve the matter once and for all , the Board wrote to the Health Department asking it to report on the following :
If there is cause for the establishment of further hospital accommodation in the Bay of Plenty Hospital District and if so where should such be established and the nature of the same .
In December 1915 , correspondence 22 was received :
... from the Inspector General of Hospitals stating that he regrets he cannot see his way to recommend to the Minister that further hospitals be established in this district during the continuance of the war , but he would be in this part of the Dominion , he expected , during the early part of the ensuing year .
