World Thrombosis day
By Fiona Williams, Nurse Educator, Practice
Development team.
13 October is Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow’s
birthday so we celebrate World Thrombosis
day around this time. Mr Virchow was a
German physician who initially described
three broad categories of factors thought to
contribute to thrombosis.
To mark the occasion and raise awareness about the risks of
thrombosis related to hospital admissions, a display was on show
in Tauranga Hospital’s main corridor. People are often aware of
developing clots on long-haul flights but not aware of developing
clots related to a hospital admission.
The day is also a good reminder for staff to, risk assess patients
and ensure the patient is aware of prevention strategies. Nurses
can discuss with medical staff the prescribing of appropriate
prophylaxis to prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and
Pulmonary Embolism (PE) which is mostly preventable.
