Overview

Chief Executive , Helen Mason .
In this issue of Checkup we ’ re delighted to share with you the new ideas and initiatives developed in our health sector and showcased at our biennial Innovation Awards held earlier this month .
The six finalists , who were selected from 29 entries , each presented their innovations at an Award ’ s evening .
The finalists were given seven minutes to showcase their innovation and then take questions from the floor . Each of the six presentations was excellent . The passion of each of the groups shone through clearly . I was very pleased not to be a judge – they had an extremely difficult job on their hands !
It was wonderful to see the pride which was evident in each team selected as a finalist . How they all worked together , focused on developing a tool or service which will improve the health of our patients and the communities we serve .
As I watched those presenting , what really struck me was how our CARE values were clearly highlighted in each presentation with pride . It was great to see how our evolved values are “ owned ” by our teams .
It ’ s about this time last year that we launched Creating our Culture and asked for your feedback on what we do well and what we can improve . That feedback was extremely valuable , and has resulted in a number of significant improvements , including the evolution of our values . This edition of Checkup includes a staff survey giving you the opportunity to tell us where we ’ re now at . I strongly encourage you to take the time to respond to the survey . You ’ ll also find an electronic version on OnePlace or connect using the QR code .
Your feedback will be extremely valuable in helping us make BOPDHB a great place to receive services and a great place to work .
We are all part of Creating our Culture .

Reducing wait times for acute medical patients – is a winner

Once again I have had the honour of being one of the judges for the 2017 Clinical School Innovation Awards . This biennial event provides a great opportunity for BOPDHB staff and contractors to share the innovative ideas they have been involved in over the last two years .
Much of what we read in the papers nationally about the health sector is often not positive or encouraging , so we are really proud here in the Bay of Plenty to be sharing with you the innovation and improvement that is happening locally . This year we had 29 applications from across our health sector . The entries reflected the commitment to improvement that is at the very heart of health services in our region .
The presentations from the six finalists were all excellent . All of them were worthy of the top place and it was a difficult decision for the judges . Many thanks to my fellow judges ; Anne Burnett , Liz Buckley , Trevor Richardson , Jackie Davis and Charlie Stratton . It was a very close call with “ APU and Paris ” taking first place . Second place went to “ The Patient Information Centre ”, they were also the People ’ s Choice on the night .
I really encourage you to read more about the finalists in this issue of Checkup . These ideas have been developed by staff in our health sector , searching for ways of improving health services for people in our communities .
Sally Webb , Chair Bay of Plenty District Health Board and Judge of 2017 Innovation Awards
