Happy 10th birthday CSU

Next month marks the tenth anniversary of Tauranga Hospital ’ s Central Sterilising Unit ( CSU ) in its present location on the first floor , adjacent to the roof garden and operating theatres .
Wind back ten years , and the CSU was the most state-of-theart sterilising department in New Zealand . The department was planned and built solely for CSU , at a time when most sterilising departments were put in any available space , however unsuitable . The four work areas comprise a decontamination suite with two automatic wash benches and three automatic washer / dryers , a separate packing room featuring four large packing benches , three autoclaves , two large steripeel benches and two gas sterilizers , a cool down area where sterilised sets return to room temperature and a loan room . Loan sets make up a large part of our workload . Increasingly complex surgery requires specialist equipment , which is loaned to us by the manufacturer . In 1988 we processed around 300 trays of loaned instruments ; in 2016 the department processed 3,325 trays .
Currently there are six full time staff , seven part timers and one casual staff member . The department is open from 7am to 11.30 pm daily , providing sterilising services for Tauranga Hospital as well as specialist sterilising for Rotorua Hospital and Southern Cross Hospital in Hamilton . We also sterilise instruments for private surgeries across Tauranga and for the newly opened Birthing Centre in Bethlehem .
