And the $18000 raised by the shows for staff projects at the hospital helped as well… A new concept in theatre is underway across the Bay of Plenty DHB. Physio leader Martin Kidd and his playwright wife Andrea have written and are producing a play which will feature only BOPDHB staff and their families. The play titled A Matter of Taste tells the story of an ancient vampire family who have fallen on hard times, and must sell their family heirlooms to make ends meet. Once again, Martin will be relying on the creative partnership with Andrea to help people to realise their potential on stage, back stage, and in production roles, to bring the audience a different view of their workplace, and how they view each other. The parents are encouraged by their daughter, Griselda, to join the human workforce, once they arrive in Tauranga. What job could she do, will she fit in, will she find love at first bite? And what about Grandpapa? Where does he fit into the picture? Join Griselda as she and family face the challenges of life at Tauranga Hospital. About the writer: Andrea Kidd is a playwright with two previous hospital theatrical productions to her name. “HEROES” and “Pirates of Coral Cove” were performed in Queensland by staff and families at Bundaberg Hospital. This time, Andrea has created a story for Tauranga Hospital staff to “get their teeth into.” Andrea has been a part of amateur theatre both on stage and in production roles on and off for 30 years. She enjoys writing for hospitals, because of the wide variety of settings and situations that provide material for her work. Although humorous, Andrea’s writing has some thought-provoking messages about how we treat others while not taking ourselves too seriously. Married to Martin, the physiotherapy team leader at Tauranga Hospital, Andrea has three children, all of whom have theatre backgrounds. Music and dance are in her blood, and she and her husband are members of “Vocal Chords”, the BOP Healthcare choir, as well as the local Ceroc dance group. Andrea is a qualified secondary school teacher who has lived and worked in many different countries, all adding to the life experience which she brings to her writing. About the director: Martin works as a physiotherapist at Tauranga Hospital. He has been fortunate to have collaborated with his wife, playwright Andrea Kidd, in the production of two previous hospital theatre musicals in Bundaberg, Queensland. Martin has extensive experience as an actor and singer in musical theatre, but it is the hospital productions that have brought most energy to his current theatre life. The recent Bundaberg productions, by hospital staff for hospital staff, added a positive dimension to workplace culture, a sense of belonging and camaraderie to the workplace because of involvement in the show. Seeing colleagues in a different light, and in non-work roles, enhanced relationships when back at work. 10 ICU registrar applies make-up to pirate, backstage, “Pirates of Coral Cove”, 2014 Orthopaedic doctor, aka Ginger Bear, hugs dental technician, aka Superman, “HEROES”, 2013 The BOPDHB production “A Matter of Taste” already looks to be an excellent and high quality show, says Physio leader and producer Martin Kidd, following successful auditions.
