Overview
News in brief
BOPDHB front line mental health staff, police and other support
services are working on a project to better support people in a
crisis situation.
This follows cases where people seeking help in a crisis have
ended up at the police station when police have responded to a
111 call, which can cause further distress.
Sue Mackersey, Clinical Director Mental Health, says the
project in its infancy was one of the key developments from the
recent annual meeting with police and crisis mental health staff
from BOP, Lakes and Tairawhiiti DHBs.
Chief Executive, Helen Mason.
It has been a great month of Matariki celebrations. Matariki
provides us with the opportunity to think about the year
which has been, and the year ahead. I wanted to take this
opportunity to thank you for your hard work, passion and
dedication in supporting our communities to be healthy and
thriving, over the course of the last year.
With winter upon us we’re at the time of year when we all have
to be vigilant in looking after our health to stay well. We’re
starting to see a spike in the number of viruses and flu-like
cases circulating our communities. If you haven’t already
done so, it’s not too late to get your free influenza vaccination.
Seasonal flu vaccinations are recognised as being the single
most effective way of protecting you, patients, your whānau
and family and colleagues from the flu.
July has been CARE values month, as we celebrated the
launch of our evolved values. This issue of Checkup shares
stories from staff, showing how our four values: compassion;
all-one-team; responsive; and excellence, are making a
difference to the health of people in our region.
We have much to be proud of as a DHB. As Matariki
celebrations draw to a close, I am filled with optimism about
the difference we collectively will make for our communities in
the year ahead.

A national Health Quality & Safety Commission (HQSC)
programme for mental health is about to get underway.
Dr Michael Ratna, Consultant Adult Psychiatrist at Tauranga
Hospital has received a HQSC scholarship to lead the first step
of this project in the Bay of Plenty.
Mike and the team will be looking at how better support can be
provided in the community to people with mental health issues
after discharge from hospital.
The Office of the Auditor General recently published a report
that shows that this issue is of concern across New Zealand
DHBs irrespective of size and location. The success of the
discharge process is critical in achieving good outcomes for
people who have been admitted with mental illness.
Smart dressings that can provide health professionals with
information on the state of the wound and when to remove the
dressing are what we can expect in the future.
That was one of the innovations covered at the New Zealand
Wound Care Society 8th National Conference 2017 held in
Rotorua in May.
The conference was attended by several BOPDHB nurses
including Judy Pullar and Tracy De Rohan, Orthopaedics Ward,
Tauranga Hospital.
The birds call, a fresh day unfurls.
A new dawn.
The promise of a new day.
