Obituary

By Shelley Gilmore , Chaplain Tauranga Hospital .
With deep sadness and great respect the Tauranga Hospital Chaplaincy team recently said farewell to Paulo Lalomauga Leaso ; a much loved and respected member of the team , and a familiar and trusted figure on the wards , especially the Kaupapa ward .
Paulo was a volunteer Chaplaincy Assistant and occasional Locum Chaplain for eight years . He was often on hand when a Samoan speaker was needed , and he was a long serving Justice of the Peace . His motivation to become a JP was to help Samoans in New Zealand navigate the legal requirements of settling here .
Beyond the hospital , Paulo was a leading light in the Australasian

Assemblies of God Church , and had established and nurtured churches from Invercargill to Cairns . Though only a part of his mission Paulo was pastor to the Pasifika communities wherever his calling took him .
He was known as Dad far beyond his immediate family , and gave love and guidance to many young people throughout his life . Their love for him was evident in the words spoken at his funeral .
Paulo ’ s other great love was rugby and he played for Samoana in Dunedin before coming to Tauranga . The local community Samoan team was largely made up of the young people from his church .
Paulo was a man of implacable faith , who lived his faith with gentle compassion , absolute commitment and quiet humility .
We will miss him . Auā o lo ‘ u ola ua ia Keriso lea ; a ‘ o lo ‘ u oti o lo ‘ u manuia lea – Filipi 1:21 Paulo Lalomauga Leaso 6 February 1940 – 26 June 2017

Support to shift your pain mindset

By Danyel Degenhardt , Community Physiotherapist , Whakatāne Hospital .
Pain is something we all experience to various degrees at some time in our lives .
But did you know all of us have the power to change the way we manage pain ?
BOPDHB is running a new service to support people better manage their pain . The two hour Rethink Pain Workshop was developed from my own experience of living with pain from the rare progressive connective tissue disorder , Melorheostosis . As well as helping patients living with pain .
In the workshop I use pain education , activities , neuroscience , hypnosis , and stories to broaden peoples ’ understanding of what pain is and how to develop their self-management skills .
Research shows the best person to change pain is you , and the first step is to understand the pain .
The Rethink Pain Workshop is held in Whakatāne on the first and third Tuesday of every month at the Disability Resource Centre , 141 King St .
The workshop is for people who want to learn how to better manage their pain , those who are caring for someone in pain and health care workers .
