Student’s eyes set on career in medicine
People Development Advisor, BOP Clinical School,
Jude Ebbett.
For Whakatāne High School student Brooke
Bridges, tagging alongside doctors at
Whakatāne Hospital has cemented her interest
in health as a career path.
Brooke is one of three students from Whakatāne High School
who’ve spent time at the hospital speaking with clinicians as part
of the Gateway programme.
The programme connects secondary school students with a
workplace in the sector that they are considering for their future.
Brooke and her peers, Finn Jenkins and Netana Barsdell were
able to walk alongside some doctors doing the morning rounds as
well as get an insight into the radiologist’s role in diagnosis.
Netana with Dr Anke Wijbenga – Physician – and Dr Jayden
Batey senior House officer.
Brooke described it as an amazing and motivating experience.
‘To see what it is actually like for doctors doing the job, having
the chance to tag along with the different doctors in the varying
departments was very interesting and provided an invaluable
insight into what medicine actually involves. The experience made
me certain that there’s nothing else I would rather do for a career.’
Thank you to all the staff that supported these students in their
placement.
