Celebrating 30 years nursing
This year Wanda Owen who is a senior Registered Nurse (RN) in
Medical Day Stay is celebrating a career in nursing spanning 30
years, all at BOPDHB.
Wanda started working as an Enrolled Nurse Student and graduated the following year. With
support from the DHB and Wintec, she did further studies and graduated with a Bachelor of
Nursing (BN) in 2004. Wanda completed a Post-graduate Diploma in 2011 and in March this
year, graduated with a Masters in Nursing with Distinction.
Wanda is grateful for support from her family, colleagues and friends. As well as Nurse
Educator Coordinator, Liz Buckley, BOPDHB Advanced Study Funds and Health Workforce
New Zealand.
She says without that support her dream would have been much harder to achieve.
And she has a message for those who are thinking of doing further studies, but are hesitant
because they don’t think they can manage it.
‘Stop with the excuses of why one cannot succeed and get studying; 'YOU' can do it’.

Careers Expo a hit with teenagers
Eastern Bay secondary students experienced first-hand what it’s like to work in the
health sector at a recent Careers Expo at Whakatāne Hospital‘s Clinical School.
Thank you to all the staff who attended for their enthusiasm, commitment and preparation and to all their colleagues
who also supported by releasing and covering services to enable the event to be a success.
