Leadership from the Ground Up –
finding our voice
By Tauranga Hospital Medical Registrar, Allan Plant.
Despite a torrential downpour of rain, more
than 60 staff travelled across the Bay to
Tauranga to attend Leadership from the
Ground Up earlier this month, an event
organised by our junior staff for our junior
staff, generously sponsored by the Medical
Assurance Society (MAS) and the Tauranga
Hospital Trust.
After the success of last year’s event, the challenge for the
second Leadership from the Ground Up event was to bring
a fresh perspective to our DHB’s next generation of clinical
leaders. The theme of the event was ‘Health starts where we live,
learn, work and play’, and we were fortunate to have a line–up
of three inspirational speakers: Professor Innes Asher, Dame
Susan Devoy, and Denise Arnold, hosted by junior doctors Cory
Malbon and Tanushk Martyn. The trio shared their diverse path to
leadership, be that through medicine, sport, law, or philanthropy.
Paediatrician and advocate for children’s health, Professor
Innes Asher spoke about her passion of finding solutions to child
poverty. She described this as ‘finding her voice’ and encouraged
the room of junior staff from our health sector in the Bay of Plenty
to find theirs.
The openness of the three speakers to share their personal
journey and views on the role of leaders in creating a brighter
future was a real stand out for me. They provided a wonderful mix
of practical advice, anecdotes, and inspiration.
