BOPDHB Checkup February 2018 | Page 2

Overview News in brief A 12-month demonstration site will be launched on Thursday 1 March providing a single place for accessing community nursing care, information and support. The BOP Community Care Coordination (CCC) Centre is part of the Integration Community Nursing Project and will be housed within SupportNet offices at 510 Cameron Road, Tauranga. BOP CCC Operations Manager Asmitha Patchay says "We want to ensure people get timely, equitable, integrated care. Someone might have multiple connections with the healthcare system because of complex needs. It's our job to co-ordinate that care and make sure they get the best care from the right provider." Chief Executive, Helen Mason. In this issue of Checkup, you will see the passion for health so many of our teams have on both the personal and the work fronts. I think that passion shines through, and creates a real sense of positivity across our DHB. It’s great to read that we once again have a DHB team stepping forward for the Oxfam 100k Challenge. And as you’re reading this, three of our staff are on their bikes on Tour Aotearoa from Cape Reinga to Bluff. It takes a huge amount of training and dedication to get to the start line of these events. Good luck to you all! There are many stories in this issue about initiatives underway to improve the health services we provide to our communities: the e-lab test; Whakatāne Hospital E3 Flow; work behind Tauranga Hospital’s renamed Assessment Planning Unit; the list goes on. It’s great to see that our teams are both doing their jobs and improving their jobs. Continuously looking for ways to improve the care we provide to our communities. It’s great when those we serve take the opportunity to acknowledge the care they’ve received. I was really touched to read in this issue about the Tauranga artist who painted a beautiful landscape and gifted this to Tauranga Hospital’s Coronary Care team as a way of saying thanks for the great care he received. What a wonderful recognition for all of those involved in his care. Whilst we’re still enjoying a very warm summer, the cooler months are fast approaching. In preparation for winter, it’s a good time to reflect on how we can keep ourselves well. Our ‘Flu Fighters’ will be starting the influenza vaccination campaign next month. Please take the opportunity to have your flu jab – protect your patients, protect your whānau and protect yourself. Awatea Pickard and Paea Tai from Te Pou Oranga ō Whakatōhea ‘shared the love’ with students at Opotiki College on Valentine’s Day. The pair provide the school based throat swabbing programme, helping to detect strep throat which if left untreated can lead to Rheumatic Fever and permanent heart damage. Community-minded people are being asked to help shape healthcare services as a new Bay of Plenty Health Consumer Council is established. The council, being set up by the BOPDHB will ensure patient and community perspectives are a core ingredient of how services are developed. It will look at areas including: Māori health, women's health, child health, long-term conditions, mental health and disability.
