Orderlies Qualify
By Ewan Robertson, Regional Team Leader,
Orderly Services.
As part of the Multi-Employer Collective
Agreement which was completed in August
2014, it was decided that in order to obtain an
incentive and salary increase, orderlies should
embark on a nationally recognised qualification.
After discussion with the Industry Training Organisation a suitable
course was written. This was taken in part from an existing
healthcare assistant qualification but slanted towards orderly
duties. We started in earnest in January 2015. I was sent on the
assessors’ course to get the ball rolling. Fenton Barrow was sent
at a later date on the same course and we now have two qualified
assessors. Both Fenton and I have also qualified on the orderlies’
qualification.

1. A knowledge portion where candidates needed to answer
specific questions around their role, their tasks and the policy
and procedures which we need to follow to keep us all safe,
legal and above board.
2. A practical assessment portion where each candidate was
followed around by an observer/ assessor recorded what
actually happened, how the task was achieved and provided
feedback for the candidate on how well he was progressing.
