Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal
a windfall for sick Bay children
Unwell children at Tauranga and Whakatāne
hospitals are set to benefit from a generous
donation thanks to BOP communities and
staff supporting the 2018 Countdown Kids
Hospital Appeal.
The annual appeal raised a total of $1.2 million for 21 children’s
hospitals and wards across New Zealand. Tauranga Hospital
was presented with a cheque for $59,000 at the Papamoa
Countdown store and Whakatāne Hospital received $35,000 at
the Whakatāne store.
Through the generosity of shoppers and fundraising efforts of
Countdown teams across the country, the appeal allows proceeds to
go back to those local hospitals from where the monies were raised.

Clinical Nurse Sharon Powley (centre) is presented with a
cheque from the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.
This year’s very generous donation allows our hospitals to go
ahead with plans and equipment specifically aimed at improving
the quality of care for children in hospital and in the community.
At Tauranga Hospital a new therapeutic outdoor space will be
purpose built in the New Year specifically for children who are
working on improving their mental wellbeing. A portable monitor
will be on hand in the Children’s Ward, allowing very sick children
to be continuously monitored as they are transferred to other
wards or other hospitals. And a mobile vision and hearing kit will
be purchased allowing children to have these important tests at a
more convenient time and closer to home.
The Children’s Ward at Whakatāne Hospital is set to build a
children’s play space specifically for sick children with its proceeds
from the appeal.
Thank you Countdown staff and shoppers!!
