A team of Whakatāne ED SMOs and Nurses
recently gathered with clinicians from Dunedin,
Hastings and Wellington hospitals for a two
day workshop focused on treating critically ill
children.

Caring for critically unwell children can be an incredibly stressful
situation. Fortunately it’s not something we often have to do. So
when this course was made available through the Australian and
New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS), we thought it
would be a great learning experience.
During the two day workshop, we were given realistic paediatric
scenarios in both high (manikins with multiple functions) and low
fidelity simulations. Lectures and skill stations also provided our
team with valuable skills and tools to help manage paediatric
assessment and resuscitation.
‘Beyond Paediatric Basics’ held at Auckland University’s purpose
built Simulation Centre for Patient Safety was led by a team of
clinicians from Starship and Middlemore Hospitals as well as
Australia.
