Let’s Get Moving Many staff were involved in projects and campaigns throughout the year focused on reducing the length of time our patients spend in hospital. In September staff in the Medical Wards and APU (Admissions Planning Unit) at Tauranga Hospital wore their PJs to work. The ‘Let’s Get Moving’ campaign highlighted the importance of getting patients up and dressed and active while in hospital to reduce risk of infection, deconditioning and a longer stay in hospital. Kia Kaha Edgecumbe In April a State of Emergency was declared after a weather bomb saw the Rangitāiki River burst its banks flooding Edgecumbe and forcing the evacuation of its residents. Many of our staff worked tirelessly long hours both at the Civil Defence headquarters and on the ground in Edgecumbe and nearby welfare centres. The community is now in recovery mode although many families remain unable to live in their homes. Whakatāne District Council’s Recovery Team has put in place a team of Navigators to support Edgecumbe residents to connect with social and health services as well as other support agencies, such as Work and Income, housing, legal and budget advice. Health Targets The BOPDHB has made a significant improvement in our results this year. We are surpassing three of the six targets set by the Ministry of Health and are making progress against the others. The Raising Healthy Kids target has improved from 33% in the Quarter 1 to 75% in Quarter 4. A new service has been set up to reach children who miss their 8 month immunisation, this is expected to lift our Childhood Immunisation rates going forward. And latest results show we have made substantial gains with the Faster Cancer Treatment target. 11
