towards 2027
The Bay of Plenty Strategic Health Services Plan was launched
setting the scene for what our DHB needs to focus on to support
people in our communities to live healthy lives in the next decade.
The plan was developed with input from staff; community-based
health services, other support agencies and patient advocates.
Staff and whānau gather for a karakia of
the refurbished Dawson wing, the final part
of the hospital redevelopment project.

A new Regional-Rural Programme featuring fifth year University
of Auckland medical students was launched in January 2017.
The students spend nearly three months at Whakatāne Hospital
and the balance of the year at Tauranga Hospital’s Bay of Plenty
Clinical School. A total of 18 students were on the regional training
programmes run by our Clinical School this year.

Project Waka
2017 saw the completion of Project Waka: the redevelopment of
Whakatāne Hospital, Te Whatumauri Hauora. The $70 million dollar
project began five years ago, in October this year a staff luncheon
was held marking the close of the project. A Weber Q bought
with loyalty points that Property Services had accumulated from
purchasing supplies was given away at the luncheon. Whakatāne
Hospital Social Worker Marie Hayward was the lucky winner.
