On 1 July 2015 the Vulnerable Children ’ s Act ( VCA ) came into force and all employees deemed to be core vulnerable person ’ s workers were advised that it was mandatory to complete a satisfactory safety check prior to 1 July 2018 .
The BOPDHB committed to ensuring that all paid employees , contractors and volunteers who work with our vulnerable population will undertake a safety check . This check involved but was not limited to a police vetting request , qualification checks , and a risk assessment upon any new information provided to the employer .
The phases of the VCA are as follows :
• From 1 July 2015 new core workers starting a job or contract must be safety checked before they start work .
• From 1 July 2016 new non-core workers starting a job or contract must have been safety checked before they start work .
• By 1 July 2018 existing core workers ( i . e ., those currently employed or contracted ) must have been safety checked .
• By 1 July 2019 all existing non-core workers must have been safety checked .
We would like to thank all of you who have already completed your checks . Around 3000 people have been checked under the first three phases . We ’ re about to start the final phase and those who have not already completed a safety check will be contacted in coming months .
This process is not discretionary and we thank you again for your assistance to ensure we are compliant with this legislation .
