Tauranga Hospital’s famous feline is no stray You can pat him, or call him a fat cat, but don’t shut him in a cage and send him down to the RSPCA because ‘Steps’ is not homeless. ‘Steps’ is the much loved pet of the Pratt family. The family's property is on the outskirts of Tauranga Hospital’s Clarke street carpark. Most days Tauranga Hospital staff will see Steps lazing about on the Clarke Street carpark steps. Such a familiar sight, his own- ers named him Steps. It’s fair to say, he’s got ‘love thy neighbour’ down pat. Insert photo of Steps being cuddled by his family. Steps also has the odd ride up and down in the Clarke Street lift – heights don’t bother him, if people are around and there's a pat to be had, he’s there. But what he’s not so keen on (or his owner certainly isn’t) is being catnapped by someone who's mistaken him for a stray and taken to the RSPCA. Despite wearing collars with his home number visible, this has happened to Steps on several occasions in recent times. So a message from Steps (and his family) pats and the odd treat left on a saucer are fine. Trips to the RSPCA are not! When the sun goes down you will find Steps, snuggled up at home. 21
