An Ode to Breast Milk

Whakatāne based Preschool Public Health Nurse Julie Ashton put pen to paper earlier this year creating this Ode for the Ukaipo Summer Latch on .
Ukaipo exists for the wellness of us By supporting breastfeeding ; extremely precious See breast milk ’ s amazing - I ’ m sure you all know Not only to nourish and make babies grow It also assists them to fight off infection It fosters attachment and early connection The heart rate , the breathing are rhythmic and calm It reduces the risk of intestinal harm It decreases the growth of disease forming bugs Thus , preventing ill-health and superfluous drugs Allergy , illness , intolerance to lactose Become much less likely for babies to have those They ’ re way better sussed at their temperature control Blood sugars stable and they ’ re quick to console Such sweet-smelling poo too and no constipation Means regular changing without reservation So clearly tamaiti are well and they thrive And breast milk improves the chance they survive They ’ re even protected from death while they sleep Making breast milk so precious and more than skin-deep ( Some more things that minimise danger from SUDI Are face up and own space as well as the boobie ) The breast even knows what each baby will need And alters to cater for each time they feed This cool living food is just the right heat Plus it ’ s tasty and free so isn ’ t that neat ! When breast feeding infants grow up and get bigger They ’ re said to have more intellectual rigour The World Health professionals all seem to agree That breast milk is good up to two , even three It helps prevent caries or holes in your teeth Protecting the chompers that wait underneath As well as the pain and disease of decay It ’ s traumatic for children in every way ( A promo on dental I just had to do Or they would create such a hullabaloo ) Obesity , asthma , disease of the ticker Longer-term issues that make you get sicker Are said to be minimised when you are older If Mum gave you the breast milk you spewed on her shoulder Of course , there are some that don ’ t breast feed with ease
Or enjoy , when you ’ re old , having breasts ‘ round their knees But if it ’ s your buzz and you ’ re finding it hard The latching is sore or your nipples feel scarred To get early help , the research has shown Makes such a difference so don ’ t feel alone There are websites , professionals , and great social media Information is based on sound academia Feeding soon after birth , skin to skin does the trick Just nipples are perfect , in fact they ’ re magic For 6 months a baby needs only the breast Till their gut is prepared for food to digest The law makes your work place support this as well The facility and time- in a nutshell You can breast feed your children any-old-where Human rights mean the critics had better beware Cos you can ’ t prevent children from access to kai Even if it affronts the odd passer-by The wonder of breast milk is just a no-brainer The life-long evidence couldn ’ t be plainer For Mum ’ s the proportion of cancer is less Emotions more stable , you can fit your old dress No waste and no plastic , your wallet is fatter Your mood is more buoyant , your tummy is flatter Our planet is grateful ; the impact is small The global significance benefits us all !
