Junior doctor gets head shaved and legs waxed for charity The mop has been chopped; the orange sheep has been sheared. As part of the Shave for a Cure week in March Dr James (Jimmy) Chancellor had his flowing ginger locks shaved off in Tauranga Hospital’s Main Entrance. Not content with going bald on top, James went through the agony of a leg waxing too. Prior to the haircut, carried out by Ali of Mt Maunganui’s Forty Thieves Barbershop, James said he would be sad to be losing his locks but it was for a great cause. A crowd of around 50 interested onlookers gathered for the big shave, including James’ mum Patricia and dad Tauranga Hospital Neurologist Andrew Chancellor. Support and guidance was offered from colleagues including: “Don’t forget to shave his eyebrows”. Afterwards James said he felt naked. “I guess it’ll be cooler in this hot weather but I’ll have to use a lot more sunblock. Being more aerodynamic now I’ll be faster on the bike into work in the morning though. “It was a really good turnout and we got some more donations which was great.” Shave for a Cure supports families who have been diagnosed with blood cancers or haematological malignancies such as leukaemias and lymphomas, as well as funding research to help improve current medical therapies. For his efforts James raised $2875.10 – well above his $2000 target. 5
