DATU: A SMALL-ENGINE HIGH PERFORMANCE HYBRID VEHICLE A piggyback electronic controller was designed and used to monitor and regulate the discharge current from the battery as the supercapacitor energy was drained. The controller also allowed for different modes of regeneration, and modulated user pedal signals to the final motor drives. Cumulatively, the individual optimizations led to a sturdy and safe 250kg vehicle that could reach 80kph in 200 meters, and sustained by only an 8hp engine. DATU bagged the Most Creative Technology for Hybrid Cars prize in the 2013 International Student Green Car Competition held in Hwaseong, South Korea. There were 50 university teams that competed, each tasked to design, prototype and race a high-performance vehicle. About the Project Team Gerald Jo C. Denoga (Faculty Adviser) & Jyj Macaspac (Team Leader) DATU is a hybrid car specifically designed from the ground-up to be a highperformance sprint car. The goal was to develop a high performance vehicle with very limited engine displacement. The resulting four-wheeled vehicle had a hybrid powertrain that could gather power independently from both a gasoline engine and an electric motor, and use it in combination or individually. Very demanding performance targets were set for the vehicle in terms of acceleration, maneuverability and durability. This required a specialized design and analysis of the various subsystems of a vehicle, including the chassis, steering and suspension systems, the powertrain and the electronic control systems, and their effects on the overall performance of the vehicle.
