THE ART AND SCIENCE OF DISCOVERY:
ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE PHILIPPINES

Archaeology is a science of discovery. From this discovery, we learn how our
ancestors lived and developed their culture and how this impacted the
environment. Since its establishment in 1995, the Archaeological Studies Program
(ASP) has become one of the leading archaeological research institutions in the
region. This paper will present some of the major discoveries that ASP has
spearheaded as well as methodological advancements that the program has
implemented. The paper will also show that as with most contemporary research,
collaboration with other disciplines and institutions has become an essential
component of archaeological research.
About the Presenter
Dr. Armand Salvador B. Mijares is an Associate Professor and currently the
Director of the Archaeological Studies Program. He received his PhD in Archaeology
and Paleoanthropology from The Australian National University in 2006. His research
is focused on understanding Pleistocene human behavior through lithic analysis
and geoarchaeology. Dr. Mijares discovered the oldest hominid fossil in the
Philippines dating to 67,000 years ago.
About the Archaeological Studies Program
The UP Diliman Archaeological Studies Program (ASP) was established on 24
August 1995. Multidisciplinary in nature, ASP is designed to oversee and coordinate
instructional, research and extension activities pertaining to the systematic
discovery, reclamation, analysis, presentation and preservation of the material
remains of past cultures. ASP offers Diploma and MA/MS programs in coordination
with the different colleges of the University of the Philippines Diliman. For the MA/
MS degree programs, one can specialize either in Prehistory, Historic Archaeology,
