Spotlight On Book Clubs Soul Sistahs Book Club Talking With President, Kenya Ervin What is the name of your book club? Soul Sistahs Book Club - Kenya Ervin, President Where is your book club based? We are located in Chattanooga, TN When did it start and who started it? Soul Sistahs Book Club was founded in September 2011 by Kenya Ervin How many members are in the club? Currently, we have seven active members How does one join the club? It's easy to join our book club! All that we ask is that you love to read, able to attend monthly meetings and actively participate in the book discussions. Membership is not confirmed until three consecutive meetings have been attended. How often does the club meet? We meet one Saturday per month. How are books selected for the club to read? Each month, I choose three books and allow my members to vote on the one they would like to read. I try to use a variety of resources to find the three book choices. I frequently use best seller lists, Amazon reviews, and authors that I have interacted with on social media. What are some of the titles that the club has read over the past couple of months? We read some awesome books this past year including, Monster by Ben Burgess Jr, The Man In 3B by Carl Weber, Diary of a Stalker/The Stalker Chronicles by Electa Rome Parks and What We Won't Do For Love by Mz Robinson. What other activities does the club do in addition to reading books? We love to go out for dinner and drinks. We also enjoy going on vacations together whenever possible. My goal for 2014 and beyond is for us to become more active in the community. What do you see as the future of books? I think the future of books is very bright. I believe that eBooks will continue to grow in popularity, but physical books will always remain as my favorite. In addition, with there being so many authors to choose from, I hope this inspires everyone to do their best to produce great books! What advice do you have for anyone who wants to start a successful book club? First, you have to love to read! I think it is great to start out with a small group of people (friends, co-workers, relatives) and grow from there. You also have to be able to deal with different personalities and opinions. Although all members play an important role in the success of the book club, the leader must be dedicated and committed to growing the book club and ensuring that it is a success. The president must set a good example for their members by being dedicated, organized, fair, flexible yet firm when needed and consistent. Finally yet importantly, networking with authors and other book clubs is a great thing! How does an author submit their work as a potential book for your club to read? Currently, authors can contact us on social media with the title and synopsis of their book and I will add them to our voting list. I am working on a more formal submission process for future requests.
