Blueprint for an Innovation Economy in Florida Research as Economic Foundation | Page 7
CAN WE DUPLICATE INNOVATION?
The AxoGen story illustrates in microcosm
tangible examples of the assets Florida must
expand and intelligently deploy to drive higher
value production, jobs and wealth for our citizens.
Those assets reside in three broad categories:
People, Ideas and Capital.
In this review, our focus is on ideas; and more
specifically, ideas borne out of
systematic research done by highly

how ideas are memorialized, measured, and how
Florida stacks up to other states. We will show
that the quality and quantity of ideas generated
in a region are tightly linked with the quality
of the region’s workforce and, by extension,
it’s economic performance. Finally, we will
consider the inputs necessary to expand Florida’s
knowledge economy.

THE FOUNDATIONS OF DISRUPTIVE SUCCESS
Between that first paper of Muir’s in 1989 and
2016, there were 11,567 papers published
reporting on the results of research on nerve
regeneration and an associated subject,
proteoglycans. Three thousand,
nine hundred and twenty-four
of those papers were published
in the United States. Of those,
Muir is either author or co-author
on 10 (See Exhibit B for a
screenshot of the PubMed
search page and the specific
search parameters). 9 For
those 3,924 publications,
there are 12,889 listed
authors; 363 of those
authors wrote six or
more papers; 328 of those
authors co-wrote papers, and
are reflected in Figure 3 and
provide a sense of the people
working consistently in this
area and their connections as
co-authors. 10 Muir and co-authors
with six or more papers are circled
in red.
