There appears to be significant challenges and discrepancies in how institutions report this data , particularly relative to “ research faculty .” However , the total of research , instructional and service faculty appears to be consistently calculated . As such , this is the proxy data source to indicate the relative size of the scientific enterprise at individual institutions . Possible alternative sources , which also appear to have similar limitations in variability of institutional reporting include the NSF ’ s HERD report . While the data here overstates the number of “ STEM ” research scientists , it provides the best source for relative inputs that we believe available .
