2 This paper uses a list based on the Standard Occupational Classification Manual to analyze occupations from six
groups, including computer and mathematics; architecture and engineering; and, life, physical and social sciences.
We exclude health care occupations in the analysis as they are more a function of population
demand for health care than a foundational element of an innovative and productive economy. See:

The graphics used to show authors is derived using software and techniques developed at Leiden University in the
Netherlands, http://www.vosviewer.com/. Default values of the “LinLog/modularity” method was used for most
analysis, with the minimum cluster size set at 10). Four authors (Wight TN, Iozzo RV, Mackinnon SE and Hunter
DA) were excluded because of their outlying number of publications, possibly a function of their administrative
positions vs. their individual productivity as scientists.

14 The earths mass (our terrestrial resource) is 5.972 × 10^24 kg. That is all we have ever had.
15 A challenge with this method is that many times unsuccessful experiments do not get cited, yet are inherently
valuable in their illustration of a flawed recipe, which precludes others from exploring an unproductive experimental
path. That said, where promising research dead ends are excluded, many times a subsequent researcher will “cite”
the prior result as reason for ignoring that path.
