Blueprint for an Innovation Economy in Florida Research as Economic Foundation | Page 13
California and Massachusetts
science underpins the success
of their economies.
SCIENTISTS DRIVE
PUBLICATIONS
The number of publications
in an MSA are largely driven
by the number of scientists in
the region. Numbers, research
emphasis and the quality
of faculty 22 provide reliable
predictors of the publication
output of a university’s faculty.
In this instance, Massachusetts
and California faculty appear to
have a greater research focus
and higher quality compared to
other states’ universities, which
are included in the Leiden data.

The number of citations in
an MSA are driven by the
number and the quality of its
publications. On the graph at
the right, Massachusetts is
clearly outperforming based
on the number of publications
generated there. Quality,
indicated by the number of
publications cited in the top
10 percent of those in their
respective fields, benefits
the Massachusetts results.
Florida lags its large peer states
in number of publications,
citations and measures of
quality like the number of
publications cited in the top 10
percent in their fields.
