change as two words of the same metal and explain in
your way through you theory.
Isn’t change not an active way of incremental
development of the object you want to change?
OS: All in all education and healthcare we find the same
situation. Rapidly changing environment that requires us as
leaders and managers and people that operate within the
system to respond in one way or another and in a reactive
way or generic way. This is the domain of Theory U; rapidly
changing situation, responding in a more active way as how
we should respond. Change leading to reactive, adaptive and
generative. From theory u we suggest that we consider all
these patterns and not get stuck on these patters. Developing
your capabilities to access change and be more generative
and reacting accordingly.
PP: In education and health care they are trying to get rid
of all kind of theories which are based on ideas. The buzz
words in education theory is that it has to be evidence
based. If you look at your theory and we saw a lot of your
videos and also saw that you are doing a lot of action
research. How does it feel to work in MIT which is not
action oriented and your choice is action research?
OS: We live in a scientific age where evidence is valued. What I would like to add is
the evidence should be extended. It should not just be on certain reality of our own
experience. Basically, all evidence is based on 3rd person observation, what we see
going around in the world. Scharmer is here to extend the concept of evidence based
social change by bending the beam of scientific observation back onto the observing
self. By extending the realm that we consider when we look for evidence from outside
to inside. So in order to include a more subtle domain of our own experience.
Action research that I am trying to promote and coin is the discipline of awareness that
brings you out to the world. The principle that you cannot understand the system until
you participate to change the processes. In addition to 3rd person view, you also need
to take into account the 1st and 2nd person perspective which, means taking the
perspective of your deeper personal experience.
