The primary mission of the Austin Police SWAT team is to professionally resolve life threatening critical incidents, while striving to minimize negative impact on Austin’s residents and visitors. In addition, SWAT is to provide tactical, administrative and training support to all members of the Department.
In a recent interview with an elite force of the Austin Police Department, the SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team, we learned what it takes to run with this crew.
Before you can join the SWAT team you must be a 4-year officer with the Austin Police Department, however you can attend basic SWAT school after being on the force for two years.
According to Commander Gage with the APD SWAT team - officers will learn the duties and responsibilities of a SWAT officer as well as special skills and techniques. Although the course is rigorous and physically demanding, once successfully completed the officer will receive a graduate course of completion.

After 4-years as an Austin Police Officer, you can apply to the SWAT team. You must have good evaluations, a clean record on the force, a good driving record and pass an oral selection board - The oral selection board is made up of a Lieutenant, Sergeants, Officers and other SWAT Officers. Let's not forget the physical training you must pass as well.
Lieutenant Katrina Pruitt, who is the only female officer on the SWAT team stated that she is treated no different than any of her fellow officers, but does enjoy the perks of having the entire locker room to herself.
One other thought you should be aware of in your quest to become a SWAT officer...you are on call 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, including being on the site of a call for as long as it takes to resolve the problem; regardless of the weather and time of day.
