Children are excited to walk to school every day because they want to earn a badge and they arrive to school refreshed, more focused and ready to learn having walked in the fresh air. In Blackpool 25 out of the 33 schools take part in the scheme supported by a local coordinator. WOW – the year-round walk to school challenge, Living Streets’ flagship walk to school scheme, is a pupil-led initiative where children self-report how they get to school every day using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker. If they travel sustainably (walk, cycle or scoot) once a week for a month, they are rewarded with a badge. On average, WOW schools see a 30% reduction in car journeys taken to the school gate and a 23% increase in walking rates. 29
