Fate brought them together. Reality solidified their motive to make a
low-budget Bajan comedy of high quality that is “unapologetically Bajan”.
What evolved was a feature film about two Bajan youts looking to better
their lives. It was shot in a real community where there are blocks, wukups and cussing. People get unfaired, paros make cameos and nuff weed
gets smoked, all on screen.
But that was just the beginning. When the film aired on the big screen
Olympus Theatres reported multiple sold out shows. Payday got so big
that it went to international film screenings complete with English and
Spanish subtitles.
The company – Bajans In Motion - dedicated to producing Barbadian
film content across all genres was born. Money was made, actors got paid,
Bajans at home got to see themselves on the big screen in recognizable
ways not experienced before, and all was well with the world.
Two years later, Bajans In Motion, previously known as Let’s Do This
Filmz, is back at it again. Truth be told, they never stopped. 2014 saw the
release of Two Smart, which Redman co-directed with Bourne who also
wrote the script and Caribbean Soca Queen Alison Hinds showcased her
acting dexterity in the psychological thriller.
“Well in Next Payday, Pack and Romie go to church….” Like I was saying
earlier, I’m in my one-on-one interview with Shakirah and can see why
she senses some trouble might come her way. “ . . . [B]ut being in church
and realizing that they are getting certain things for free they decided
that this is a better life. You know, what’s the point of working hard for
everything when you could just get it for free?”
I’m intrigued. The original cast is back, and so are some new characters
played by actors Jherad Alleyne, and Patrick Foster. There’s even an
appearance by the Mighty Gabby.
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens. Next Payday: On A Wing
And A Prayer debuts April 15th, 2015.
