SÃO PAULO ACOGE HASTA EL 10 DE DICIEMBRE UNO DE LOS ACONTECIMIENTOS ARTÍSTICOS DE MAYOR
TRASCENDENCIA INTERNACIONAL. ESTE AÑO SÍ HAY BIENAL.
De la asociación de una novela de Goethe, Afinidades elec-
tivas, con el pensamiento de Mário Pedrosa en su tesis De
la naturaleza afectiva de la forma en la obra de arte, surge el
título de la 33 edición de la Bienal, el encuentro bianual de
arte más importante de Latinoamérica.
Cada dos años, artistas de todas las ramas del arte, in-
cluidas las artes visuales, teatrales, gráficas, cinematográficas
y arquitectónicas, exhiben su trabajo convirtiendo a São
Paulo en un centro rico y estimulante de expresiones artís-
ticas. Desde su cuarta edición en 1957, el evento se realiza
en el Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion en el Parque Ibirapuera,
una estructura de tres pisos con un espacio de exhibición de
30,000 metros cuadrados, diseño especial para la ocasión
por Oscar Niemeyer y Hélio Uchoa.
Antes de su inauguración del 7 de septiembre, ya se pro-
yectaba como una edición única en su historia de 67 años.
El curador general Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro cambió el for-
mato rompiendo mediante sus propuestas con el tradicional
esquema del «curador estrella», ponderando la visión de un
grupo de artistas que también hacen las veces de curadores.
Otra de las novedades ha sido la de eludir el formato clásico
de la gran exposición temática, favoreciendo en su lugar una
constelación de experiencias curatoriales, independientes
unas de la otras.
Con cada edición, la bienal sigue acaparando la atención
internacional que ya la reconoce por su positivo impacto
para difundir las tendencias del arte. 07 de septiembre al

sÃo paulo biennal. The theme of the 33rd edition of Latin America´s most import-
ant biannual event surges from the combination between Goethe´s novel, “Elective
Affinities”, and the thesis of Mario Pedrosa, “On the Affective Nature of Form”.
Every two years, artists of all kinds (visual, theatrical, graphic, cinematographic, archi-
tectonic, etc.) convert São Paulo with their work into a rich and stimulating artistic epi-
center. Since its fourth edition in 1957, the event is held within the Ciccillo Matarazzo
Pavilion at the Ibirapuera Park, a three-story facility designed specially for the occasion

by Oscar Niemeyer and Helio Uchoa. Even after 67 years of history, this edition was
highly anticipated. Chief curator, Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro broke the tradition with a new
format based on the classic scheme of the “star curator” while considering the group
vision of other artists who also act occasionally as curators. The absence of the big
theme exhibition in favor of a constellation of independent curatorial experiences is
another big surprise. The Biennial keeps attracting international interest edition after
edition for its positive impact on the promotion of new artistic trends.
