TECHNOLOGY FOR
WRITING
THE KEY
Components
Apps such as Popplet and Toontastic are great tools for
teaching writing and keeping student engagement high.
Popplet is a great app that allows students to visualize
their writing plan/ideas. Toontastic enables students to
draw, animate and share their visual stories. Virtual
Graphic Organizers/ Story Webs are also a great
teaching tools to differentiate writing. Sites such as
Creately allow students to select any type of interactive
graphic organizer they may need to plan out their writing
process. Websites such as Storybird allow students to
create online story maps and virtual characters. They
can even publish the final version of their story with this
website. Google Documents is a place where students
can practice the writing process with technology. Most
students already have an account set-up for them, and
can easily access all of their writing creations in their
Google Drives. Their writing is always saved, and they
can use all of the tools available to them including the
chat and sharing features to be able to peer-edit and
revise their writing.Websites such as NoRedInk, Kahoot,
and Educreations are just a few places that educators
can get student’s writing with technology. Students in
the 21st century learning environments are begging to
game-based learning and Kahoot is an avenue that is
not only fun, but also extremely educational. The
possibilities are endless with ways teachers can teach
writing through this website, and the data that becomes
available after each game, is top notch. NoRedInk is a
place where students get individualized instruction and
practice with very little time or effort from the teacher.
With Educreations, students learn how to write and
revise. The teacher’s can use an iPad to narrate over
and annotate a piece of sample writing for students to
see.
