Message from the Executive Director Lou’s Letter “If you want to go faster, you go it alone….” Walk of Hope Tour Curious about life on our campus and in our cottages? Would you like to see first-hand the warm, family-oriented home your support makes possible? Last October, part of our management team and Robert, one of our “A” students, traveled to a retirement community in downtown Houston to visit Mrs. Jean Robinson. Ms. Jean, along with her late husband Tommy, founded Boys and Girls Country. We were there to celebrate her 100th birthday and Ms. Jean was sharp, alert and remembered exactly why she and Tommy started a home for boys. Forty-five years ago Tommy and Jean and several of their friends decided to expand an after-school program they had developed. They wanted to make more of a difference than a few hours after school could make in the life of a child. With a $25 donation and a donated plot of land (then rice fields), they started Boys Country (named by Ms. Jean), which eventually became Boys and Girls Country. “Your support will enhance this place called home, a place for our kids to become resilient.” In November, we hosted an emotional groundbreaking ceremony to expand, improve and upgrade the housing for our 100 plus family members. Some of our current cottages were built in the 1970’s and have served us very well. However, these new cottage homes will be more efficient, more private, and will provide our families with much needed room and accommodations. Your support will enhance this place called home, a place for our kids to become resilient. Come join us for a tour of our campus and cottages. It’s an hour of wonderful stories, great information and an inside look at where our children live. This is not a fundraising event. Bring only an open heart and a friend. We appreciate you not succumbing to cynicism. As more of you join us in our mission, our ability to create a Christian home environment where we can prepare our children to be self-sustaining and contributing adults has been enhanced. We know heroic things happen when people get involved. Thank you for both joining and investing in the strength of the Boys and Girls Country family. Saturdays at 10 a.m. “If you want to go faster, you go it alone; if you want to go further, you go with others.” Below are the dates for 2015.
