Apprentice Program Summer Jobs Do you remember your first real job outside of doing household chores to earn an allowance? Every summer Boys and Girls Country gives our teenage students an opportunity to work on campus in our Apprentice Program. The six-week program is designed to give students solid work experience to add to their résumé and a glimpse of the expectations of a job in the community. Selam worked in the clothing closet. This summer 18 students attended a job fair as part of our Apprentice Program. Students applied for their job of choice, went through the interview process and once hired, received orientation, training, and verbal and written evaluations. The goal of the program is for teens to understand the employment process including: searching for jobs, completing an application, interviewing, being punctual, requesting schedule changes and time off, maintaining acceptable job performance and more. “This is a great setting for them to understand the chain of command and employer/employee relationships,” says Director of Operations Quintes Stark, who oversees the Apprentice Program. Deven worked in the administration building. Near the end of the program, the apprentices learn to create résumés and describe job skills and experience. By going through the Apprentice Program, students earn the privilege of working off campus in the community the following summer. Senior Update College Bound In May, nine of our students graduated from high school and spent the summer getting ready for their first semester of college! Three of our kids completed the Prairie View A&M University ACCESS program (Academy for Collegiate Excellence and Student Success), which includes six weeks of college classes. Several also participated in summer bridge programs offered at Prairie View and The University of Texas at Austin to help them transition into college life. Noah and Daniel worked as Boys and Girls Country lifeguards this summer, and several of our kids worked part-time jobs between classes. They learned so much over the summer and are ready for the next step in their journey.
