Communication
This class provided students with a great deal of
confidence and creativity, giving them an
opportunity to express themselves and develop
self awareness. Students were encouraged to
present to their teachers a small production at the
end of the year.
English and Mathematics
During 2009, students commenced story writing,
poem analysis and media interpretation. They
also expressed interest in developing spelling
strategies and movie reviews. Students reflected
on issues such as Aboriginal history through the
movie ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’. This work has inspired
the B.E.S.T. Centre to develop a cultural infusion
unit for our students to be delivered in 2010, so
that students can appreciate our local Indigenous
cultures and languages.
Mathematics offered individual programs combining
basic mathematics tuition and appropriate applied
and ‘real life’ mathematics attuned to the needs
and interests of each individual student.
Design, Creativity and Technology
Woodwork: Students made coffee tables and tool
boxes as part of their Certificate 1 in General
Construction.
Welding: 4 students participated in this program
at the Morwell Campus offered through GippsTAFE.
They will continue with this program in 2010.
Automotive: There were 3 automotive classes run
in Semester 2 of 2009. Two classes commenced
learning about automotive and engineering
through research, excursions and practical work;
whilst the senior students worked alongside
Victoria Police Youth Liaison Officer Senior
Constable Darren Anderson to rebuild an engine.

Cooking: 10 students in 2009 received their Safe
Food Handling Certificate. Students also made a
recipe book and enjoyed visiting a restaurant as
an end of year activity. This also included a
kitchen tour and discussion on cooking methods,
safety and job prospects with the Lead Chef.
Students also participated in taste test
opportunities whilst cooking a vast array of foods
such as quiche, roasts, lasagne, handmade
gnocchi, fruit salads and many more.
