Teaching And Learning
Civics and Citizenship and the Humanities
In 2009 all the domains were covered through
integrated units.
In 2009 the Community Program was successfully
implemented with a number of fantastic
excursions and community projects including the
Melbourne and Immigration Museums,
Scienceworks, Nationwide Planet Farm and local
field trips such as the Robotic Dairy in East
Gippsland.
Health and Physical Education
All students participated in aspects of the “Life Be
In It” program. This class consists of attending
the gym, pool, ten pin bowling, archery and
general outdoor education units. A number of
students completed their basic CPR training.
Students learn about health and hygiene and
discuss the healthy eating pyramid, obesity and
sexual health.
8 students from our Morwell Campus participated
in the 8 day high challenge “Altered Reality
Program” to the mountain Cobras in the high
country in Victoria. The “Altered Reality”,
Program is aimed at building capacity and social
development. Students accessed a broad range
of group and individual challenge experiences to
reduce risk taking behaviours and increase their
resilience and empower young people to make
good choices in their individual decision making
and life choices.
Although both physically and mentally draining all
participants completed the camp and stated
it was one of the best experiences of their lives.
The camp was filmed and student’s stories on the
journey were recorded using journaling. A
presentation evening for students and families was
held at the Morwell Village Cinema to celebrate
their success.
A number of students also participated in workplace
mentoring during 2009, with one young man
securing a painting and decorating apprenticeship
as a result of his placement with an employer.
Students valued learning about trades, skills and
knowledge of the workplace invaluable real life
trades and learning experiences at the Job Skills
Expo event at Lardner Park in West Gippsland
hosted by the Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning
Employment Network.
Another student was able to complete his workplace
mentoring placement in a tyre service, whilst
another young woman continues to volunteer one
day per week with the RSPCA opportunity shop,
which will continue in 2010.
I Create - Art
A number of students enjoyed the art program
this year with numerous collages being made,
paintings developed and personal pieces achieved.
Four female students from Morwell Campus
participated in an overnight camp to Wilson’s
Promontory located on the South Coast of
Gippsland.
