Quality, Compliance
and Risk Management
“How can we do things better?” is a
question that is frequently heard at Berry
Street. This is part of our commitment to
high quality services and what we see as
our responsibility to everyone with whom
we interact.
Most of the work we do at Berry Street
carries some inherent risk. We understand
this and are continually improving the way
we think about and manage risk. We also
know that we are reliant on the judgement
of our staff ‘in the moment’ and them
knowing when to ask for help and guidance.
^^Following external review of our Take
Two program, ‘EQUIP’ and corporate
and support standards, we met all
required standards and achieved an EA
(Extensive Achievement) for Criteria
22.4 learning and development
^^The Victorian Registration and
Qualifications Authority extended
registration of our Berry Street School
for five years
^^We reviewed our risk management
system, developed tools to assist staff
in identifying and escalating risk and
estab lished “Service Improvement
Committees and Quality Champions”
in our six service delivery areas
^^Strengthened our emergency planning,
including bushfire and extreme weather
monitoring and responded to the
Morwell mine fire
^^Used the learnings from the Victorian
Parliamentary Inquiry Report ‘Betrayal
of Trust’ and Royal Commission into
Institutional Responses to Child Sexual
Abuse to inform our policy approach in
dealing with allegations of past abuse
^^Continued our investment in the Nous
benchmarking project, where we used
data from a number of community
service organisations to benchmark
administrative and support services
^^Installed tracking and immobilising
devices in all residential care vehicles, to
reduce the risk of serious harm if they
are stolen
A new start
Sarah’s story
Sarah was 15 when she was referred to our
Southern Adolescent Support Program. Both
Sarah’s parents had died, her step-father had
sexually abused her and she had started selfharming. Fortunately, Sarah had a cousin who
took her in. Our role was to support them both and
help Sarah successfully complete her VCE – which
she did, starting university this year. Our staff
advocated strongly for the Department of Human
Services to pay for the orthodontics work Sarah
desperately needed. It was smiles all around when
Sarah recently came into our office to ‘show off’
her new smile.
