Elegantly manoeuvering
between genres.
Joan Wasser started her musical
career almost 20 years ago as a vio-
linist for artists like Rufus Wainwright
and Sheryl Crow. She started creating
music under the name Joan As Police
Woman in 2002 and released her
debut album Real Life in 2006. She
has since collaborated with artists
like Lou Reed, Beck and Norah Jones.
It’s been ten years since Joan last
visited Bergen. Those who attended
the smoky venue Garage back then
will recall a mesmerizing performance
alternating between punky rage and
melancholy, performed in Wasser’s
smooth vocals.
The concert in Festival Square is one
of the first on Wasser’s Joanthology
tour, highlighting her first fifteen
years of writing and recording music.
She strips her sound down to its true
essence, performing her songbook
solo with piano and guitar. The scope
of the material reveals her dedication
to experimentation and love of all
kinds of music.

hythms that command you
R
onto the dance floor.
With their mixture of salsa, rumba,
reggaeton, jazz, cumbia, hip hop, reg-
gae and everything else that can be
found in the category ‘Latin rhythms’,
Lariba takes the stage for the sec-
ond time at the Bergen International
Festival. Singing and rapping in five
different languages, their songs virtu-
ally overflow with attitude, creativity
and energy. What may seem like an
arbitrary mix of styles, sounds any-
thing but random.
‘Lariba is not about copying other
traditions, but about defining our
own fusion’, says band leader David
Stauffacher.
Supported by
Grieg Foundation The routined musicians play with a
refined, agile and courageous style,
gathering all the musical threads
into a unison call to party, dance and
have fun. The music has a drive and
a pulse that almost commands the
audience onto the dance floor, and
that is exactly what their goal is.
