earls by Grieg in beautiful natural
P
surroundings.
Edvard Grieg Kor, choir in residence at
Troldhaugen, is naturally closely associated with
the composer, and has his entire choral producti-
on in its repertoire. At the concert in Ullensvang
the choir performs works by Norway’s foremost
national romantic composer in quintessential
Norwegian surroundings.
The concert includes excerpts from Suite from
the time of Holberg, one of Grieg’s best-known
works, in an arrangement written specially for the
choir by Jonathan Rathbone, musical director of
the Swingle Singers for over a decade. They also
perform Jeg elsker dig! (I love but Thee!), Grieg’s
musical setting of Hans Christian Andersen’s
poem from 1864. Composed when Grieg was 21,
the work triggered an international craving for
love at the time. Since then over 300 recordings
of the piece have been made by great artists
ranging from Frank Sinatra to Kirsten Flagstad.
