G enius loci is a term used by the anci- ent Romans which in Latin means 'the spirit of the place', its distinctive, uni- que atmosphere. The inspiration for the programme for these two concerts comes from my own memories, perfor- mances and moods at Troldhaugen', says Tor Espen Aspaas. In 2016, the profiled pianist from Røros was made Knight 1st Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of Saint Olav for his efforts for music and cultural disse- mination. This year he returns to the Bergen International Festival to per- form two solo concerts in Grieg's villa. June the award-winning musician will perform works by Schumann and Strømholm, as well as by Beethoven and Grieg. Choosing the music he will play was with all of Troldhaugen in mind. Tor Espen Aspaas piano 'The nature, the rain, the Nordås lake, the view; the volumes of Beethoven sonatas that Grieg sat on down in his composers' cabin and the sheltered but lonely atmosphere there; the composer portraits, the paintings and the objects in the living room; the books in the shelves; the distinctive sound of the grand piano and the inti- macy, the closeness ... Troldhaugen is a very special place that forever 'moves in' to the consciousness of a musician,' says Aspaas.
