In his Diabelli Variations Beethoven
took a simple waltz by Anton
Diabelli and expanded it into a work
of impressive depth and breadth.
Among the devices he prescribed
were unbridled tempi and dynamic
fluctuations, and he included several
musical references to other compo-
sers.
