With a reputation as one of the most versatile ensembles in the world, a high artistic standard and integrity, Oslo String Quartet constantly enriches the string quartet repertoire in a multi- tude of genres through their critically acclaimed recordings and successful concerts and tours. In Bergen they perform a work by Festival Composer Unsuk Chin, whose music they were not familiar with at the outset. ’It was an exciting challenge, so we took it,’ says cellist Øystein Sonstad. The father of the String Quartet, Joseph Haydn, figures with one of his later quartets, which Sonstad describes as ’very sweeping, crisp and fresh.’ The programme also includes Debussy’s only String Quartet, one of his earlier works. ‘It’s an absolute favourite in the very extensive repertoire for the string quartet – of course youthful, but at the same time surprisingly mature. His quartet is clearly influenced by Grieg’s great G minor Quartet in form, the- mes and content. The result however is pure Debussy at his best.’ Oslo String Quartet Geir Inge Lotsberg violin Liv Hilde Klokk violin Magnus Boye Hansen viola Øystein Sonstad cello J OSEPH HAYDN (1732–1809) String Quartet in G major. 77:1 UNSUK CHIN (1961–) ParaMetaString (1996) CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862–1918) String Quartet no. 1 in G minor, op. 10 Supported by The Savings Bank Foundation DNB – Dextra Musica and Anders Sveaas’ Charitable Foundation WWW.FI B.N O/EN 055
